 get a foot in the door means to obtain some kind of advantage at the beginning of a bigger or longer process ( get a first opportunity).
Here are some examples:
  • It's not a great position, but at least my foot is in the door.
  • I need to find a way to get my foot in the door.
  • I am doing an internship for SKT Telecom. It's an opportunity to get my foot in the door.
